A minimum of 17 years of formal education is required—either 12 years of schooling followed by a 3-year bachelor’s degree and a 2-year master’s degree, or a 4-year bachelor’s degree followed by a 1-year master’s degree in Sociology or allied fields. Acceptable related disciplines include Political Science, Economics, Business Studies, Labour Studies, Psychology, Cultural and Social Anthropology, History, Philosophy, Linguistics, Mass Communication, Journalism, Film and Television Studies, Education, Geography, Law, Social Work, Development Studies, Criminology, Archaeology, Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, Post-Colonial Studies, English, Comparative Literature, Religious Studies, Sociology of Science, Art History, Theatre Studies, Aesthetics, and Art Production. These qualifications must be obtained from a government-recognized institution in any SAARC country with at least 50% marks or an equivalent grade.

Candidates must also have a Master’s Degree in Sociology or Sociology as a subject with a minimum of 55% marks, or an MPhil in a relevant discipline with at least 55% from a recognized university. As per UGC guidelines, SC/ST/OBC/PH candidates receive a 5% relaxation.

Strong communication abilities—both written and verbal—are essential. Ph.D. in Sociology Admission

The admission process for the Ph.D. program follows a two-phase structure. The first phase consists of an Entrance Test, where candidates must score at least 50% to qualify. However, due to limited seats and intense competition, the actual shortlisting cutoff is typically much higher. Applicants who clear this stage proceed to the second phase, which requires submitting a written research proposal, a statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation, and attending a personal interview. The final merit list is prepared by combining the scores from both phases.

In addition to university-level entrance tests, national examinations such as UGC NET, UGC CSIR NET, GATE, and SLET are also accepted. Candidates who qualify in these national-level exams are exempt from the university’s written entrance test but must still appear for the interview.
