About This Course

The Department of Veterinary Parasitology has been an integral part of the college since its establishment in 1958, with the initial aim of providing high-quality undergraduate education. Over the years, the department has expanded significantly in academic scope and research excellence.

Undergraduate teaching began at the time of inception.

The Postgraduate program in Veterinary Parasitology was introduced in 1995.

The Postgraduate program in Animal Biotechnology was launched in 2007.

The Ph.D. program in Veterinary Parasitology commenced in 2013.

Currently, the department offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral degree programs, preparing students for successful careers in academic, clinical, and technical fields related to veterinary parasitology. To date, 42 students have completed their postgraduate degrees, and three scholars have been awarded a Ph.D. in Veterinary Parasitology.

Along with teaching, the department actively undertakes time-bound research projects and provides essential diagnostic services for parasitic diseases affecting livestock and poultry.

Diagnostic Services Offered by the Department

The department provides laboratory-based diagnostic services to support veterinarians, farmers, and livestock owners. These include:

Faecal sample examination for diagnosing helminth infections and enteric protozoan diseases.

Skin scraping tests for detecting ectoparasitic infestations.

Blood smear examination for the diagnosis of haemoprotozoan infections in livestock and poultry.

These services play a critical role in disease surveillance, management, and prevention strategies for farm animals.

About the PhD in Veterinary Parasitology

The Ph.D. in Veterinary Parasitology is a research-intensive doctoral program that focuses on the biology, pathology, diagnosis, and control of parasites affecting animals. The program typically spans 3 to 5 years and is designed for candidates who wish to pursue advanced research in veterinary parasitology.

Although primarily focused on parasitic organisms (protozoa, helminths, arthropods), the research may sometimes overlap with studies involving bacteria and viruses, particularly when investigating complex disease interactions in animals.

Historical Background

In earlier years, parasitic diseases of domesticated animals were taught as part of Preventive Medicine within the Department of Bacteriology. As scientific advancements led to better control of bacterial and viral diseases, the significance of parasitic infections became more widely recognized.

By 1945, the impact of clinical and subclinical parasitosis on animal health, productivity, and welfare prompted the establishment of a dedicated post of Parasitologist under the Director of Animal Husbandry, Maharashtra State, to oversee parasite surveys, diagnosis, and control measures across the old Bombay State.

With growing awareness of the importance of parasitic disease control, a dedicated Department of Parasitology was established in the college. The original government post of Parasitologist was transitioned into the role of Professor of Parasitology, and additional positions, including Lecturer and Research Assistant, were created to strengthen academic and research activities.

Eligibility

To be eligible for admission to a PhD program in Veterinary Parasitology, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Applicants should have completed a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Science and a Master’s degree in the relevant discipline.

Candidates must hold a Master’s degree with at least 60% aggregate marks. A relaxation is provided for reserved categories—55% marks for SC/ST candidates.

Only candidates who secure the minimum qualifying marks—as determined by the respective institution—are shortlisted for further rounds. This minimum score may differ from one institute to another.

Qualified candidates are then invited for group discussions (GD) and a personal interview, where their subject knowledge, research aptitude, and communication skills are assessed.

Final admission is granted based on the combined performance in the written test, academic records, and interview assessments.
